The truth about getting this job in NYC

Unfortunately, most superintendent and handyman jobs in New York City go to people with connections. Many people end up paying someone to refer them, and even that doesn't guarantee you the job. Some people even charge their own family members.

Here at SK Academy, you find out how to get in the right way: the skills, the licenses and the union path.

SK Academy trains handymen and building superintendents with real-world repairs, tap-to-learn building drawings, the Superintendent's Handbook and professional checklists, all explained so simply anyone can learn.

Unclog a toiletPlumbing · Easy · 15 min
In simple words

Something is stuck in the toilet's bendy tunnel. You push and pull with a plunger, or use a long twisty tool, until it comes loose.

Something stuck in the toilet. Use the plunger.

Tools you need

  • Toilet (flange) plunger
  • Closet auger
  • Rubber gloves
  • Old towels
  • Bucket

How to do it

  1. If the bowl is almost full, DON'T flush again. Lift the tank lid and push the flapper down, or turn off the water valve behind the toilet.
  2. Put towels down. Seal the flange plunger fully over the hole and push and pull firmly 10–15 times.
  3. If it doesn't clear, use the closet auger: put the curved end in the bowl, turn the crank while pushing down until the cable is all the way in.
  4. Keep turning while you pull the handle back up to bring the cable out.
  5. Flush a few times to make sure it's really clear.
Safety
  • Don't use a regular drum snake in a toilet — it can scratch or crack the porcelain.
Fix a toilet that keeps runningPlumbing · Easy · 20 min
In simple words

Water keeps running because the rubber stopper inside the tank doesn't close tight, or the tank fills too high. You change the stopper or fix the water level.

Water keeps running. Change the rubber flapper.

Tools you need

  • Universal flapper
  • Fill valve kit
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Sponge
  • Towel

How to do it

  1. Take off the tank lid. Look: is water spilling into the overflow tube (the open pipe in the middle)? If yes, the fill valve or water level is the problem. If no, it's the flapper.
  2. Water level too high: lower the float (turn the adjusting screw or slide the clip down) so water stops about an inch below the top of the overflow tube.
  3. Flapper leaking: turn off the water, flush to empty the tank, unhook the old flapper and chain, and clip on a new one. Leave a little slack in the chain.
  4. Fill valve hissing or not shutting off: turn off water, empty the tank, disconnect the supply line, unscrew the lock nut under the tank, and install a new fill valve per the package.
  5. Turn the water back on and test several flushes.
Safety
  • Turn off the water before taking anything apart.
Fix an outlet with no powerElectrical · Intermediate · 30 min
In simple words

The outlet has no power. First you press reset buttons and check the breaker box. If that doesn't work, power off and check for a loose wire.

Plug in the tester to see what's wrong.

Tools you need

  • Outlet tester
  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Insulated screwdrivers
  • Flashlight

How to do it

  1. Plug in the outlet tester to confirm it's really dead.
  2. Press RESET on the outlet if it's a GFCI. Also look for another GFCI nearby (kitchen, other bathroom) and press RESET there.
  3. Go to the panel. Find a breaker in the middle position. Push it all the way OFF, then ON.
  4. Still dead? Turn the breaker OFF. Use the voltage tester to make sure the outlet is dead.
  5. Remove the cover plate and pull the outlet out. Look for a loose or burnt wire. Hot/black goes on the brass screw, neutral/white on the silver screw, ground on the green screw.
  6. Tighten loose wires (if your building allows you to). Put it back, turn the breaker on, and test.
Safety
  • ALWAYS turn off the breaker and test before touching wires.
  • Burn marks, melted plastic, or a burning smell = stop and call an electrician.
